Sleipnir is the eight legged horse of Odin. The child of the union between Loki and the stallion, Svaðilfari, Sleipnir carries Odin across bifrost, the rainbow bridge that leads to Asgard, and is described in the prose Edda as being the best of the horses belonging to the Aesir.
The fact that Sleipnir has eight legs is clearly intended to indicate that he is twice as fast as any normal horse, making him a fitting steed for the chief of the gods.
Jim has drawn our Sleipnir design in the Urnes style, taking inspiration from Urnes style brooches of the 11th century that have been found in Scandinavia and Iceland. By adding eight legs to the design it is clear that this might not work as well as the writers of the Edda, or the skalds of the oral traditions before them, thought it did. But it does lend itself very well to being formed into an interlace design!
The prose edda does specify that Sleipnir is grey in colour, but we have chosen a very striking red for this design.
The patch has a handy velcro backing, and is perfect for bags and jackets.
Desgined and printed by us in Scotland.
