¾ Inch York Borre Style Strap End

This strap end is based on one found at St Mary Bishophill Senior, York. It is decorated with a Borre style ring chain, with a highly stylised version of the animal heads found in other strap ends of the Viking Age. This is visible as the remnants of the eyes and nose, on the rounded, tongue shaped, terminal of the strap end. This dates the piece to the 10th century.

The style of this piece is very similar to belt fittings from across Britain and Scandinavia, although this one was likely made in York.
