¾ Inch Ashaig Insular Strap End

This strap end is a reproduction of one found at Ashaig, on the Isle of Skye. It is formed and decorated in an insular style, with all the decoration being applied by the technique of chasing. The original had a hole in the concentric circles of the field above the terminal field, which we have suggested should have been filled by a dome headed rivet, as was common in Insular belt fittings. These were usually formed from thin sheet, so could easily have been lost in use, or at the time of deposition. This type of strap end is dated to the 10th century, and was fixed to the belt strap by rivets through a split in the end of the piece.

This strap end is cast in lead free pewter, which is fairly soft, so care is required when attaching it to leather. See our ready made belt section if you want us to do that for you. If intended for reenactment use, we recommend that you check with your group authenticity rules before purchasing.
