Half Inch Coppergate Borre Style Strap End
Half Inch Coppergate Borre Style Strap End
This strap end is based on one found at 16-22 Coppergate, In York. The knotwork design in the main panel is in the Borre style, with the terminal being formed into an animal head. The original was cast in lead, and while this may have been used as a pattern for casting the same design in copper alloy, it was broken, suggesting that it may have been intended to be a finished strap end. This version has a split end, to accommodate the belt leather, which is how the originals were usually attached. This strap end is dated to the 9th to early 10th century.
This strap end is cast in lead free pewter, which is fairly soft, so care is required when attaching it to leather. See our ready made belt section if you want us to do that for you. If intended for reenactment use, we recommend that you check with your group authenticity rules before purchasing.
