This design shows the goddess, Freya. She is the goddess of love, fertility, war, and gold. She is one of the Vanir, the family of gods that share Asgard with the Aesir, and is also associated with cats, two of which pull her chariot. As a goddess of war, Freya takes half of those slain in battle, who go to her realm, Fólkvangr, to live in her hall, Sessrúmnir.

Our design depicts Freya with a sword, to show her role as a war god, and wearing her cloak of falcon feathers which allows her, and any others who wear it, to transform into a falcon. She also wears her necklace, Brísingamen.

The border of the design is in the Oseberg style, with multiple interlinked quadrupeds forming a protective band around the goddess. It is not clear which animals the original Oseberg beasts were meant to represent, so here, as is appropriate for Freya, we have portrayed them in a more feline form.

The whole design is coloured golden yellow, to represent gold, and the ‘tears of freya’, also known as amber.

We have used the Oseberg style for this design as it dates from very early in the Viking Age, when the inhabitants of Scandinavia were more likely to have worshipped the gods recorded in later literature. Indeed the two women buried in the Oseberg ship burial were likely to have been intimately familiar with whatever rituals and observances the goddess required. With this in mind the figure of Freya herself has drawn inspiration from the Oseberg tapestry, as well as other depictions thought to represent her.
